Hi, I'm Rich Severson. I started this channel all the way back in 2006 because I love to play and teach guitar! I have been teaching guitar for more than 50 years and have developed hundreds of lessons that are dedicated to serious guitar players who love jazz, blues, fingerstyle, bebop, country, and more. My channel is loaded with guitar concepts that I have learned and fine-tuned over the years and they include a lot of tips, tricks, and even some short-cuts to get you playing like a pro. I also love guitars and have a lot of them. I collect them and buy and sell them all the time. I love talking about guitars and as you can see I love comparing the sounds of some of the most expensive models of Gibson, Heritage, Eastman, and Guild guitars. I also play tons of gigs with some amazing players and love to feature them on my channel as well. You can find links to all my websites below! Thanks for checking out my channel! Please share & subscribe!

Clarification for camp students: Meditation was played at our Yosemite Jazz Workshop in 2023… it will not be played in 2024.

Guitar Shipping NIGHTMARE! Severed Headstock On An Ultra-Rare Archtop

From the moment I shipped this stunning 1996 McKerrihan Archtop to a student in Italy via UPS, I had a bad feeling! It was somehow severely damaged by UPS, and I do not recommend them to ship guitars. The headstock is totally severed! The custom-made archtop guitar was built in 2001 by master luthier Glen McKerrihan of Phoenix, Arizona and if newly commissioned would cost around $8,500 today! F...

At the 2:12 mark you play a song. it is beautiful. What is the name of that sone?
LOVE the 775!
The Murphy Lab has nothing over the Severson Lab..... a moment of heat gun would have made the nut set up come to order. Beautiful rescue, boy`s.
Good to know,thanks
I bought an L5 from Robbie's music in Newark NJ in 1969 and it said Custom on the cover plate. It wasn't a custom order from me.
Oh those are Heritage Guitars, that's why they sound the best. I correct myself, those are probably the most expensive.
The Gibson's sounded the worst and i'm sure they're the most expensive.
You could make a cigar box sound great. I can't make a Gibson sound great, so I sold it 😅
If string vibrations excite the top to vibrate more, then the strings vibrate less (which is what the pickups see). That's the Conservation of Energy Law as it applies to guitars. And that's also consistent with several decades of complex measurements of real guitars, including semi- and fully-hollow electrics (see for example Ch 7 of Zollner's "Physics of the Electric Guitar"). So unless you think loss of string vibrations are somehow an intrinsically "good" thing, increasing top vibration does not make intuitive sense in terms of actual guitar physics. Semi-hollow guitars have been measured to lose somewhat more string vibrations than solid-body electrics. And fully-hollows lose a little more again. That is a function of the bridge becoming more "mobile" as the construction anchors it less rigidly to the thinner tops (with/without centre block). As such the bridge's mechanical impedance to string vibrations is reduced. So more string vibrations leave the strings and flow through the bridge to vibrate the top plate. So how do you perceive that *more* lost string vibrations improves the "tone" ? Of course tone is subjective, but the notion that more losses improves tone is sufficiently counter-intuitive that, as Carl Sagan said ... "extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence". So you really need randomized blinded before/after recordings to tell if you can *really* pick a difference, let alone one that you prefer. Without that, there may not be anything more than wishful thinking going on here.
A million thanks for playing The Shadow of Your Smile - I used to start playing the tune with no introduction but your explanation of improvising over B7, then F#dim and then Em before going into the tune has helped me a lot - really appreciated, thanks Rich ❤
I have a 580. It has a lovely tone, particularly when picked near the pickup. It seems to basically be a 503 with some extra bling for $200 more. I think that's well worth it, if just for the Gotoh tuner upgrade: they are excellent and the guitar stays in tune. I also appreciate the position markers on the fretboard, which are important to me. The only problem for me is the neck width. I have small hands and have difficulty grabbing the sixth string with my thumb. It puzzles me that Eastman is so set on a 1.75" nut. Seems they would do well to make models with narrower widths. Other than than that I love the guitar.
Eastman is better than
Sounds Great Rich. What's the tune called?
Hey Rich, where can I order a replacement pickguard for my HR custom?
I enjoy the interaction with the video man!! It is well rounded and very explanatory. I cant wait to join up again!! It has been 10 years and I always come back to Rich Severson for inspiration!! Rick From Newmarket Canada
Thank you RIch
Beautiful!
Thanks for sharing all this footage. Looks like a great time, and a great learning and bonding experience!
I have an old EXL-1 where I replaced the mini HB with a Rhythm Chief 2000 and it has a sweet tone and looks vintage to boot!
Had two..got rid of them.
Any quick thoughts comparing the Eastman AR910CE vs. the AR880CE?

Nice video, as always. I like the John Pisano AR880CE. Been thinking about making the purchase.
I struggle which strings to use? the sound acoustic like possible, do you have a suggestion I tried gypsy strings but give a problem with the b-string sounde louder emplified.
Jazz annoys me, but you make it palatable.
The setup neck shape string height neck shape fret radius and how it works for you means more than body type style brand and pickups .
Your left hand is so economical. Oh the guitar is beautiful and sounds great too.
thank you Rich!
A guitar with a set pickup usually has a thick top as it’s expected to be used amplified and a thick top reduces feedback. A guitar with a floating pu is usually expected to be played acoustically and has a thinner top.
I like your solution. One of each
Both sound great but I prefer the L5 robust tone.
Dont know how good they are but there alot
How do I purchase the solo guitar TABS?
Great version of Eleanor Rigby.
Great video. Personally, I think the Tal Farlow sounded best in your hands... I was waiting you fulfil your promise to tell us, why it's no. 5 on your list, but didn't really hear the reason... would you air your secret, please? Anyway, thanks for the video. BTW my second favored was the L-4.

Dear Rich, your sound is always perfect. How do you set your amp ? Do you use effects ? Thanks.
The Emperor II can be quite variable from one to the next. My Emperor II had a faulty pickup, the plate that the poles screw into had been drilled out, no thread and the screws were only held by the wax. Having destroyed the pickup finding that, I replaced them with Toneriders, very similar to the originals. The neck is very good. With a bit of fettling the action can be set very low for effortless playing even with heavy strings. The soundboard took a long while to play-in but got there. It is quite thick, which does mean you can play it through a stage amp with a band without it howling. Is it a jazz guitar? Yes, but it can play any genre, blues, jazz, R&B, rock, etc ad naus, except high-gain when it will howl. Drummers do have a volume control. They do not have to hit the heads as hard as possible. Drum sets come in various degrees of loudness.
I heard room mic with humbuckers. But not single coils. Prefer the singles
Great guitars, great playing! Question: what microphone is used to record the amp?
...... 6 years ago?.....Is this guy still alive?
Haha yes I am. We go live every Thursday at 11:00 am PDT. Hope you can make it to a live stream!
They all sound great, but I like the Golden Eagle the best.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Rich! Thanks so much for this excellent comparison video. This helped me so much. This is an indispensable channel for new and old guitarists alike.
Beautiful playing Rich
Does it need to be super acoustic? to get a good electric sound? no... Now if these were fully laminated I wouldn't mind it at all, but they advertise them as a solid top and make them fat, and the current A-150 hasn't anything mounted on the top so that it can vibrate freely, in that case you would hope for some nice acoustic tone but they fall pretty flat there. I do think they are lovely guitars overal.
is the instrument for sale?
Rich just rests his fingers on the fretboard and great music appears, lol.
Doesn`t matter which guitar you are playing, in your hands they are all good!
